C&NW Flashback
Author: CNW8531

A look back at the C&NW from the early 1990's.

1st  An empty grain train pulls onto the mainline at East Clinton for it's journey westward across Iowa for reloading.

2nd  The same train a few miles west crossing over at Camanche.  The geep was put on the point of this train for ATC purposes.  Does make for a rather odd lash-up though.

3rd  One of the last C&NW business specials I caught is eastward approaching Clinton with power pulled from the freight pool.  The F's were already history by this date, and the UP influence is already beginning to show.

My favorite is number 2. Not only does this give an interesting perspective, but the first-generation Geep is on the point. Great catches.

nice photos but is it the same train in photos 1&2 ... the first covered hopper (both CNWs but different colors) on both trains is different with the light colored hopper in photo #1 and the dark colored hopper in photo 2 ... did they make a pickup enroute somewhere ??? ...

Correct.  I'm surprised they didn't turn the SD60 as it did have cab signals.  As
delivered, the 8500's below 8543 didn't have them, although some got them later.

Yes, the train picked up some additional cars off the ice house tracks in Clinton before departing westward.

What surprises me even more is C&NW went to the trouble and expense to install ATC on ANY of the ex-RI GP7s.

Just my opinion,

Thanks for including the  " Wyoming Centennial " unit.  I happen to have the " HO " version of that.

Your welcome Frank!  I also have an HO scale model of the Wyoming Centennial unit.  It's very nicely done and looks great.

Business Car train shot :
The placement of the U.P. Dome Diner "City of Portland" ahead of the power car is very interesting.   Deadheading somewhere obviously.
