GM&O on the EJ&E 1970's
Author: filmteknik

Unit trains of (as I recall) Com Ed bathtub gondolas of coal ran through with GM&O power and cabooses.  I think they went to a power plant on the state line at Lake Michigan.  But there did they get on the J?  I presume Joliet.

Most likely got on the J at Joliet.  I remember seeing these trains through Griffith in '72 when I was a kid.  Usually had 5 GP30's or 5 GP35's or a mixture of the two models. Always 5 units though.

At one point the GMO and/or the "J" leased Elevation 1 between UD tower and MC tower
in Joliet.  They used this for run through coal trains.  I worked MC tower as a extra dispatcher
in the early '70's.  We would empty our trash cans into tyhe "coal buckets" as they went by!

Hi there zr190. Good to hear from you. I always wondered how that move was made. I got shots of the GM&O SD's at South Joliet. Used to wave to you guys as I went by working the Rock Island Dummies and freights. I held a regular brakeman's jon on 11 & 12 for a few weeks at ine time. Got to know Elmer Campbell really well at UD too.

My stepdad ran a TV and radio repair shop in Waukegan, Il. One day, a trainmaster from the EJ&E came in for some radio repair. He mentioned the GM&O runthroughs going to the Com Ed plant on the north side of Waukegan on the shore of Lake Michigan and left a business card for me. He stated that if anyone gave me trouble while watching the EJ&E trains, just show them the card. I went trackside several times, but never caught one.
