Nostalgia & History > "U-boats" on the N&WDate: 02/06/16 14:37 "U-boats" on the N&W Author: NKP715 Winter is good for one thing - - opportunity to stay in and scan slides.
Working on the N&W, and here's some early GE's -- hope it brings back memories. 1. N&W's first new U25B (they inherited 14 from the Wabash) was the 3516, built as a replacement for wrecked WAB 512. Erie, 6/16/65 2. ex-WAB, 3527 leads an eastbound at Brocton, NY, 8/66. (2nd unit looks sharp, doesn't it ?) 3. In July of 1974, here's U25B 8139 westbound in Springfield, PA. She's wearing her "C&O merger" number, for a marriage that never happened. 4. U30B 1946 ready to go at Erie in 5/67. Note the capped exhaust stack. A number of these U30B's were built ahead of the delivery schedule, and stored. 5. In July of 1974, here's the 1958 eastbound at Moorheadville, PA 6. A wayward U30B - - the 1963 is about to snag orders at Topeka, leading an eastbound on the UP on July 1, 1967 7. In December of 1976, the 8474 (another "C&O number") crawls westbound along 19th St in Erie. That tow truck driver wisely decided to let 'er by. 8. A more pleasant day "on the street," as U28B 1911 heads west. 4/70 9. Lastly, the N&W acquired three U30C's. The 8000 awaits pickup in Erie, 4/74. Love the 3 builder lash up at Moorheadville, PA.

The U25's and the 1900's were unique with their 16 notch "Armstrong" throttle vs. the standard 8 notches on other loco's. They were a different running experience. The sound of the GE's, before regulation made noise more muffled, was great compared to the annoying whine and vibration of their EMD counterparts. Duane.
