Bethlehem, PA engine terminal - - 50 years ago
Author: NKP715

In Oct of '66, spent time in the Bethlehem area, and stopped by the
engine terminal several times.  Lots of variety, as you'd expect back
then.  FM Trainmasters from both CNJ and RDG.  Some six month
old L&HR Alco C-420's, along with the last of their RS-3's (most had been
traded in to Alco).  The real find, and what I was looking for, were several
of the CNJ baby-face Baldwins.

Here's some of the photo's from those visits.  Hope you enjoy this look
back, just shy of half a century ago.

Now that's a bunch of finds. Very nice. My first time there was about 12 years later - still amazing stuff but none of what you saw.

I understand those Baldwin "Babyface" units made a very unique sound when under load - do you remeber what that might have sounded like?  How did they sound at idle?

Wow.  Great transition photos with the old and the new.  L&HR RS3's to C420's. Reading Trainmasters to GP35's and CNJ Trainmasters and Baldwins to SD35's.

Thanks for sharing, I always loved that paint scheme on the L&HR C420's.

Do you know what it said under the Jersey Central liberty insignia on Baldwin #71?   I can make out ".......... Express"

Neat photos of a great time and units we wish were still around.  Look at all that EPA soil!

Clean denim and flannel shirts and dirty diesels, great stuff!
