If You Like Mechanical Things, You're Gonna Love this Crane
Author: MartyBernard

Operable, built in 1920, but unloved, the Brown Hoisting Machinery Company Self-propelled Crane 7036 at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum. She was, and probably still is, on the "Spur of the Unloved", i.e., a spur track far from the public viewing area because it will be some time before renovation will start. For full information see: https://www.psrm.org/trains/equipment/joseph-levin-sons-7036/

I photographed it on New Years Day 2009 while poking around on the South 40.  It was a great day to be out in the desert.

Enjoy these nine photos,
Marty Bernard

Also where this crane and water car are parked is isolated from the rest of the rail road. Switch is ripped out and some of the track.

Thanks for the photos, Marty!! Fun memories! I was there the day that crane was delivered to Campo,
and when it was reassembled, Vern Cook and I fired it up and moved it under its own power from the
depot area, up into the museum yard! The only time it was run under its own power!

It is more or less just a display piece, it was originally steam powered, the previous owner, Levin Bros.
scrap yard on Terminal Island, L.A, repowered it using a 6-71 Detroit with a Caterpillar radiator!

While moving it, a piece of the brake rigging wrapped itself around one of the axles and had to be
extricated from the truck!

The boom is not the original and was modified by Torch to fit this crane! This alone will prevent it
from being used. The museum has an American Self Propelled 40 Ton Crane, acquirred surplus
from the Navy out of the 32nd Street base in San Diego. I operated that one many times in support
of museum projects!

You just gotta love the total lack of safety protection for the crane operator, with all those open gears and shafts.

Yes, but back then operators had "common sense", something that the young people of today do not have.
