Thirty Thursday: UP Class Unit Switching; BN On The Road

Here's a couple more GP30 shots I found for "Thirty Thursday":

1) UP800 switching in 8/84 at unknown location.  UP used their 30's in the yard pretty early on.  It seemed that most, if not all of the yard and transfer assignments in Cheyenne were being worked by 30's when I lived there 1972-73; certainly not the optimal yard engine.

2) BN2205 heading up a five unit consist (2205-6820-8125-2203-??14) on an eastbound departing Shelby MT 5/83.  Both the 2205 and the 2203 are ex-GN so they should be familiar with the territory.

Terry, when I came to the UP in 1976 they still had SW's and NW's for yard switchers and an occasional GP-7. Then around the late 70's they brought in the GP-30's for yard switchers and they were horrible becaue of the turbo lag for kicking cars. We ended up pulling the PS wire to give them some capability. Theywere used on the locals up to Granite Canyon before they came in the yard. Then in the mid-1980's they brought in a B-23 from the MOP and they were even worse for yard work.

You could also open the generator field switch, rev it up to about run 5 then close the switch. Lots of sparks out of the electrical cabinet, but the units took right off. Or so I've heard.-BMT
Here's a shot of the "other" class GP30 at City of Industry.
