F Unit Friday: C&S #703-A (A Mystery Slide!)
Author: Rainier_Rails

This is a duplicate Kodachrome slide I acquired from John Benson, of C&S F3A #703-A.  There is no info written on the mount, so date, location, and photographer are unknown.

The #703-A was built in October 1947 in Order #E790 as CB&Q #119A (serial #4410, frame #E790-A7 [presumed]), 1 of 10 F3A's (#116A & D to #120A & D) built in that Order, along with 10 F3B's (#116B & C to #120B & C), for a total of 5 A-B-B-A sets.  One of these sets, #119A to D, was sold in July 1960 to C&S as #703A to D.  #703A & B were traded in to EMD in April 1968 on the second Order of C&S SD40's (#879-#887).  #703C & D were sold for scrap in April 1968 to PECO, as listed on the BRHS website, which does not list what PECO stands for.  Does anybody know the full name of this scrapping company?  Or does anybody have info on this slide?  Thanks in advance!

PECO is most likely Precision Engineering Company, Later became PNC, Precision National Company.

This again is why I hate using only initials folks.  PECO was for a short time, the name used for the former Philadelphia Electric Company.  This has now been merged into Exelon Corporation, I believe around the year 2000, which is one of the largest power companies in the nation.  Here in Maryland, they own our Baltimore Gas & Electric Company.

Here's PNC F unit #717 @ C&S's Rice Yard in Denver, I shot this on Dec. 5, 1971

My pic may be of one of these 2 B&LE F's that went to PECO, which then became PNC:

717A EMD F7A 16589 6/52 3105-A3 To Precision Engineering Co. (D), 1970.

717B EMD F7B 16600 6/52 3105-B3 To Precision Engineering Co. (D) , 1970; to C&NW 327, 5/71 ; retired 4/12/; to PNC (D), 6/76, scrapped.

Thanks for posting this.  The only time I saw F units on the C&S was
during a bus ride to Trinidad, CO, in 1967.

As for the location of the picture, I'm guessing Rice Yard in Denver.

Not sure that's Rice Yard, here's a view of it in 1971 and as you can see the engine service area is quite a distance form the main yard and the spacing in the C&S F unit and those cars seems a lot closer than what is shown on this picture.

Looks like the very south end of the service tracks.  I would go with Rice also.
