Grand Trunk Tuesday - No. 392 at Blue Island
Author: Englewood

Ken Lanovich photos.  No notes on slides. Process date of Sept. 1978.

Photos taken from the Rock Island overpass of an eastbound at Blue Island crossing over
through the hand throws from the Eastbound to Westbound mains.

I am thinking it is No. 392 based on the time of day and the ATSF reefers.

I think you are correct that this train is 392.  The reefers up front are tell tales.  I would often shoot this train in South Bend, Indiana in the mid-afternoon as it passed through the old Olivers yard.  It was in the early 80s the regular eastbound movement I could count on seeing, on the part of the system, at the time.  Judging by the sun angle and knowing the track layout at Blue Island the train you show here would have been a morning passage I suspect in summer.  Thanks for sharing.

Blue, not Island is all I see in these pictures.Contrast is way off.
Not complaining,otherwise nice shots.What I can't get over
all the woods on the west side.

I tried my best to bring the pictures back.  Ken had them stored in a basement for
many years and the color on some have really started to turn bad.  These ones started out
as almost all green.

As for the woods it is strange that there are some places like this in the midst of a huge metropolitan center
that have never been developed.  That land could have been used to create a direct "head on" connection from
the Rock Island to the B&O, IHB and GTW for the UP, SP or whoever could have bought the Rock.  Such a connection
would have probably cut off close to a day in the time it takes freight to travel through the Chicago area.

Does anyone know where that single track across the bridge next to the train went to?
