Bamberger in Salt Lake City
Author: donstrack

Here are three photos of Bamberger no. 303 in Salt Lake City. No date. From the Gordon Cardall Collection.

1) Bamberger 303 traveling south along 1st (200) West, crossing South Temple Street, just about to enter the Salt Lake City terminal.

2) Bamberger 303 and friends at the Salt Lake City terminal. The site is Symphony Hall today.

3) Bamberger 303, with its proud engineer, whose name was not recorded.

This actually the second 303, before it became unmotorized trailer no. 406 in 1928. Bamberger 303 (2nd) was built in 1913 as no. 317, which became 303 (2nd) in 1919.

(This roster data comes from Ira Swett's "Interurbans of Utah," which has been found to have a few errors. But it's the best we have at this time.)

These three photo were scanned from some really funky, non-Kodak negatives that are extremely contrasty and under exposed. They turned out pretty good, through the magic of digital post-processing.

Good stuff, Don, thanks for posting.

Given the automobiles in #1 and #3, I'd guess the date to be late 30's,
certainly pre-WWII.  FWIW.

On an operation like this, was the operator called an engineer or a motorman?
