Nostalgia & History > "Maintenance of Way" Operations on the Southern Pacific !Date: 05/25/16 09:34 "Maintenance of Way" Operations on the Southern Pacific ! Author: KeyRouteKen Hi Everybody-- As promised, you are about to take a "sojourn" with Key Route Ken to different locales upon the great Southern Pacific system to see what "Maintenance of Way" operations were all about. This is a subject that is not carried very often on Trainorders.com ! There are approximately ninety-five photos from the late 1920's to middle 1930's that I have assembled to help tell my story. They are from my late Father's photo album. They were in very poor condition. Infact, I threw his worn out, torn photo album out in the garbage pickup yesterday. But first, I removed all the photographs and scanned them into my computer at a jpeg size of 300 dpi. It took me two days to scan them all ! So don't worry-- they have been saved ! A very few years ago, some of these photos were seen on Trainorders before. I thought I had lost them ! But THIS time, you get to see his entire album.SP Welding Gang # 23 (System) traveled in FIVE Western states for the Southern Pacific.. CA, NV, NM, AZ, OR.. They were responsble for welding track, bridges and signal masts. My Dad 'Jim Shattock' was the foreman. They lived aboard an "Outfit Train"--a number of old coaches and a tank car or two for water. My Dad and his Gang were involved with the following major wrecks:
Selma, CA 1937 The "OWL" Harney, NV 1939 The "City of San Francisco" Watsonville, CA 1944 Cab Forward Boiler Explosion My Grandfather, Victor Shattock and his oldest Son, Ronald, also lived on an "Outfit Car" of their own. They were in the Water Service Department and were mainly assigned to the Davis, CA , Sacramento, Woodland, Elmira, Vacaville, Rumsey and Capay hamlets. My Dad and his Gang visited places like:Albany, OR Eugene, OR Sudden, CA Arlight, CA Springfield, OR Concepcion, CA Del Monte Jct, CA Monterey, CA Salinas, CA Honda, CA Sargent, CA Marina, CA Cascade Summit, OR Oakridge, OR Steins, NM Vanar, AZ San Carlos, AZ Shedd, OR Bowie, AZ Willcox, AZ Sybil, AZ Dragoon, AZ Texas Canyon, AZ Tangent, OR Jefferson, OR Lordsburg, NM Cochise, AZ Palmdale, CA Tehachapi, CA Bealville, CA Caliente, CA Mojave, CA Beowawe, NV Imlay, NV Lovelock, NV Toy, NV Harney, NV Selma, CA to name a few, from what I found. "Maintenance of Way" was a Family affair ...My Grandfather Victor and Uncle Ron were in the Water Service. My Aunt Irene and Uncle Roy were in the Signal Department. My Dad Jim was in Track and Wayside Maintenance. My Brother Jimmy worked as a Machinist Apprentice in West Oakland at the "System Maintenance of Way" Shop. --------------------------------- The following photos are in no certain order and contain everything from "Live Steam" models to Firearms and horseplay !! These are great! What a fine look at the SP in an era before most of us were around! This brings back memories of my Great-Grandfather who was a Section Foreman on the Missouri Pacific handling M of W along the MP passenger main from Independence, MO (just east of Kansas City) to Sedalia, MO (where MP had a big shop). He worked from 1899 to 1940, staying on to get the line in shape for the first streamlined Missouri River Eagle trains with their blue, white and gold E-3 diesels. After he retired, during World War II, he moved west to the Bay Area and handled track expansion at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard south of San Francisco. He and my Great-Grandmother lived in a Civil War-era converted boxcar (they called it an "extra gang car") during the early years, and he had photos like this that I recall seeing, but they were destroyed in a flood. As such, yours bring back memories of my own families photos of working on the railroad in years gone by. Thanks again for sharing; I really love all the Style B signals and those classic model trains! Best wishes, ShastaDaylight Date: 05/25/16 10:32 Re: "Maintenance of Way" Operations on the Southern Pacific ! Author: KeyRouteKen Photo 46. "Pastime" (Teaching a Dog new Tricks)
