Nostalgia & History > Signal Sunday: Peeking through NR JctDate: 05/29/16 09:01 Signal Sunday: Peeking through NR Jct Author: santafe199 Here’s a look at NR Jct in Emporia, KS from the inside-out. This is where the traditional passenger main coming down from Topeka joins the freight main, otherwise known as the “Ottawa Cutoff”. I’m standing on the Peyton St crossing hand-holding a long telephoto shot. Not usually a good idea without a tripod, but I got lucky with virtually no camera jiggle. We’re looking east through the back of the westward searchlight signal bridge. A closer look between the lead unit and the pickup at the Carter St crossing reveals the east leg of the WYE which is still very much intact in 1981. A mere 4.2 miles further east (behind this train) are the crossovers at Wiggam, where these 3 main tracks narrow down to 2 all the way to Holliday, KS.
1. AT&SF 5204 leads train 305 K-1 into the crossover plant at NR Jct on the east side of Emporia, KS on August 11, 1981. Thanks for peeking along! Lance Garrels santafe199 Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/27/22 03:35 by santafe199. |
