Nostalgia & History > Good book for your summer vacationDate: 05/30/16 11:23 Good book for your summer vacation Author: WrongWayMurphy I just got back from a vaca in Alaska and took this worn out paperback with me. Its a fun read.
If anyone wants it for their summer vacation, PM me with address and I'll send to you. Date: 05/30/16 15:54 Re: Good book for your summer vacation Author: CZ10 His columns were legendary!
Another good "railroad read" (though fiction) would be "Death Rides the Zephyr" and "Death Deals a Hand" by Janet Dawson. Both take place on the California Zephyr of the 1950's from the point of view of run of the Zephyrettes. Ms. Dawson did a good job of researching the on-board service on the train. It's a nice light read. Date: 05/30/16 18:01 Re: Good book for your summer vacation Author: patd3985 I just finished an OLD railroad fiction book called "We Win". It was written in 1898 and re-released in 1900 and 1902! I has a lot of precise railroad practices from all members of various crews. The language in it is quite elegant (a lot of words you never hear anymore such as shant and naught and fortnight. The English language was so beautiful back then. It's a shame they don't talk like that nowadays!
