The 1877 railroad strike depicted here was the first general strike in U.S. history, a particularly bloody one which formally drew the line between industrial workers and the handful of powerful financiers who controlled the country and its economy. Not just railroads, but miners, canal workers, grain elevator workers, dock workers, etc. In much of the north and midwest, it was a general strike. In the south, the railroads were shut down, but there was less spill over to other industries..
