It was a neat little chase.
1. Meeting the California Zephyr, Amtrak Train 6 at Truckee, CA. 2. At Truckee. 3. My notes say these SP units are its helpers. Continued ... Edited 2 time(s). Pictures #4 & #5 are reversed. Doubt this is a coal train - otherwise you'd see coal up above the car top. Some kind of ore movement? Good stuff nonetheless. I really miss the helpers over Donner. This could be empties heading to Oakland to get coke offloaded from ships to bring to Utah.
If it was ore headed west, where would it be delivered to? There weren't any steel mills left in California in the 1990s, were there? Marty -- do you have any other photos showing whether the cars were emply, or just loaded with ore? So wouldn't the cars be piled high? Seems the only cargo it could be carrying in those hoppers would be ore. But still, ore fills up the cars about halfway, I would think it would be visible in some of those overhead shots. Thanks for the pics, Marty, and for the discussion, everyone.
