Nice video and good looking power and trains.  Over the years, I have been able to shoot nearly all those units unpatched on the UP in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Do they still ship sugar beets by rail or have trucks taken over ?

All of the sugar beet refineries in California have closed except for Brawley, which is near where those beets were coming from. If I remember correctly, sugar beet acreage in California is down significantly. It is unlikely that any are shipped by rail in California anymore. I have not seen any in probably over 15 years.

Also, I believe that Mendota was receiving beets by rail back then.

No, Mendota went truck in the early 80s along with Manteca . No rail beets since 2000

I watched SJVR haul sugar beet hoppers to somewhere on the West Side Line in the late 1990s.
