That smoke makes  me cringe.  Either that engine has some serious mechanical problems or the worlds worst fireman.

As I watched this, thinking about what I could say and realizing I could nitpick it to death,
it hit me that I was just lucky to even SEE this.  Thanks for posting it.

It seemed to me that helper was working very hard and producing an awful lot of black smoke
today's EPA would heavily frown on.

SP fans will love this video, that's for sure.

I remember watching an AC-12 as a helper in San Timeteo and at low speeds and working
hard they smoked a ton! You'd see them between Bassett and Puente at speed with fairly
clean stacks. Great memories.

Back in the day.  Sure was overfiring the poor thing, but it's a great video to watch.  Thank you!

Great rare film. Interesting to see the bay window caboose with orange end in service with steam on the SP.

I can hear that distinctive "wheeze" of the air pumps from here!

Whenever we got over to Glendale to pick up relatives from
the bay area (late 1940's-early 1950s), we were treated with
an SP steam parade. These bay window jobs started showing
up (in my memory) around then. Those cabooses were just as
surprising to a 4 year old as was the occasional Diesel.

Remember what crap fuel was being used during those final years of steam on SP.

Judging from Mexican adventures, the fuel was their rejects!!

Who cares about the smoke, this is a really cool video.  I like how they cut off the helper and then Y it and then put the caboose back on the train.

Air pollution regulators and some railroads frowned upon engineers running their steam locomotives with a lot of smoke long before the EPA was created.

Those guys were getting dirty, probley a heavy train knowing SP, not to mention the grade! Didn't change much into the diesel years either when it came to the SP engines smokin it up! (of course alot of that was do to mechanical problems).  Really killer old film!

This had to be filmed in the late 50's. At 3:21 that's a 56' ford fairlane crossing the bridge.
