Brake smoke in the shadow of Mt Shasta
Author: photobob

A week or so before I went into the Army in May 1965 I went for one last trip up to Dunsmuir. I got  this westbound going downgrade near Andesite.

That is the first picture I have seen where the rear marker light shinning is visible.

aaaaahhhhh thanks for the correct info ... whwn i got hired on Amtrak that's all i smelled and saw was asbestos brake shoe smoke especially anywhere near Frankford curve where the hoggers approached the curve throttled up and did last minute heavy braking, timing their reduced 50mph speed restriction as they entered the curve ... in fact the railroad after a decade or so started pulminary testing for employees from being around brake smoke and asbesros 30th burning rope for pull aparts ... i don't recall what year they switched from asbestos brake shoes ... did all freights have composite brake shoes and if so why did passwnger cars have asbetos shoes ??? ...

Everyone missed the mark on this one.  The smoke is probably the leaking oil from the old  journal boxes seeping onto the hot wheels...  photobob Wrote:

I agree with both, journal oil and heavy brakes or sticking brakes
