On April 27, 1976 I got my first look at granger favourite Rock Island at South St. Paul Minnesota, with paired up SD40-2 4799 and U30C 4580. The light was perfect for both the coming and going shots. Richard Yaremko

The red and yellow was always my favorite RI paint scheme.  Love those shots!  Great catch!!

Very nice!  I go to South St. Paul often.  Sure wish I could have seen the Rock Island there.  Thanks for sharing.

Fresh ballast and matching clean paint schemes on the Rock?   Gotta see these pics to believe it!  Excellent.   BSB

Richard,

Thanks for posting those shots.  The 4799-4589 along with the 4492 had arrived earlier that day (423am) on train 80A26 from Kansas City.  It was normal practice at that time to use all or part of 80's road power during the day to make a transfer run.  In this case they cut off the 4492 and used only the 2 6-axle units to make a trip to/from the Soo Line across town.  The Soo Transfer departed Inver Grove Yard at 1145am and arrived back at 610pm; probably around the time of your photo.  Those 6-axle units left town later that night (1120pm) on train 81A27 for Kansas City with 52 cars.  They kept the 4492 around for a while to switch and make transfer runs.

Take care,

Mark

The 4500 & 4700's arrived late in the life of the Rock. I seem to recall a UP trust plate on them. On the Illinois Division we only saw them to be delivered elsewhere. We got to deliver a good number of new units that were destined for SP/SSW and DRGW.

Great shots of the big dogs from both builders for the Rock before Ingram blue poofed the franchise. Hard to believe that it's been almost 483 months on those images. CN noodles 9 and 10 deep in photo #1 seem almost timeless. Thank you for posting these.
