What year did the GP40P-2's quit hauling passenger cars and where did they get assigned after?

The SF Peninsula commute trains with SP equipment ended in 1985 June .
That is when all use of SP equipment ended on the SF Peninsula .
After this Caltrain silver push-Pull operation started with F40s and CDTX gallery cars.
I hope this info helps .

Has any books been done about the history of Southern Pacific's commuter service?

The units went into freight service and local service.  I had the SP 3199 that was renumbered to the SP 7602 on the Saugus local out of Gemco (Van Nuys) . California between 1994 and 1998.  I have stated before one of the best and most reliable engines that I have ever operated..  It has been renumbered to the UP 1375.

Not sure if you knew this, but they worked weekends in freight service while they worked the commute. I have photos of them on Donner playing weekend warrior.

Here are a couple of views of the three Espee GP40P-2s in freight service between LA and Portland BEFORE they started their Bay Area commute service.

The first two images show #3199 crossing the Molalla River near Canby, OR (1975)

The third image shows #3199 gliding along the banks of the Willamette River at Oregon City, OR on a hazy early Spring morning. (1975)

Best regards,
