Some Less Conventional Shots by Roger Puta
Author: MartyBernard

Roger did not annotate any of these slides so any help you can provide to fill out a caption will be greatly appreciated.

1. Roger like his wide-angle lens.  Most of us only use ours when we are in a tight situation.  Not the case with this shot.  AT&SF 5182 in February 1984.

2. Back when "cloud" meant a cloud.  AT&SF 5264 in October 1985.

3. As by now you have realized, Roger sure liked glint shots.  AT&SF 5323 in March 1983.

4. Color.  Roger shot exclusively Kodachrome II.  Why the color in this old slide is so strong?  I do not know.  I did nothing to enhance it.  This shot is also an example of a going-away shot that stands alone.  AT&SF 8037 in March 1981.

5. I don't know where this was taken.  The slide was in with his Santa Fe slides.  Most of us would not even notice something like this on a dull day.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

That's a trip Roger and I did on the Needles District in late January, 1984. Made it as far east as Franconia, Arizona.

I don't have my notes handy (will dig later), but I'm sure the photo is at Newberry with a westward in the morning. That's me in the background inspecting the set-out power.

Did Roger stock up on Kodachrome II before
it was discontinued? And he never ran out?

Barriger photographed the house in pic 4

Maybe the water tank is still there too,
in the diesel exhaust.

Finally noticed the diverging track to the right of the lead unit - this is an eastbound at Baca, NM (Prewitt on the road map): https://goo.gl/maps/SxRxv5cDyVD2

How about a westbound at Sandcut, CA in the morning?  The mountains, cantilever, and that shed on the right appear to match: https://goo.gl/maps/HaayL3id6Q62

The houses on the left and the hills in the distance fit Essex a lot better than Newberry: https://goo.gl/maps/mUSZR8EwtsG2

I don't think the third photo was taken at Tehachapi.  If it was, one would see all sorts of buildings on the left side of the photo (including a packing shed and the Tehachapi depot, which were just east of the signal bridge).

Evan is right, of course-- #3 is Sandcut.
I haven't checked Signor's book, but
no doubt the mtns in the pic looking
east at Sandcut will match #3.
