Memories in Lompoc, CA.
Author: lamta_jay

Reading some of the latest posts on the operations in and around
Lompoc made me scan a "bunch" of slides taken in this area. While
I called on Lompoc every other week this local was a Daily Local,  I
think the crew said they were off on Sunday. Most my shots were
taken on Wednesdays.

First and Second were taken on June 27, 1985

#1.....Coming off the White Hills Branch about to cross SR1 in Lompoc.
#2.....As the same train leaves town headed for Surf with SD7r #1503
#3.....I thought this was a rare catch, two Kodachrome SD9r's on the
         Local on Sept 28, 1988.

I will scan some more

Thanks for looking

Jay

I'm so happy you have good memories of that place, we went up to the J-M plant for a service
call many moons (Jurassic Era) ago. Miserable, hot, dusty place, we keep wondering how some
place within not many miles from the beach could be a 100 degrees! I was at the J-M Long Beach
plant a couple weeks later and they were all "How'd you like our other plant? Pretty nice huh?"

Out

There used to be a narrow-gauge electric railway at one of the mining operations east of Lompoc--the only non-museum electric railway south of San Francisco after the PCA line in Santa Cruz County closed around 1970.  Because it was a plant-facility railway, it was off-limits to railfans unless they knew someone at the company.  Is this still in operation.

Ya, I used to start out my day in Santa Barbara and Goleta and figured out
Lompoc was a great place to be FROM. However one of my Largest and
Loyal customers was headquartered in Lompoc. He also had a store in
Santa Maria. W.C. Fields really miss pronounced it as LAMPAC...LOL

#7.....Another day with SD9r's which I saw 90% of the time. 6/17/1987
#8.....The real end of the branch.  I think somebody said this part of the
         branch is gone now. 9/23/1987
#9.....I took this at Surf. I had just found out that my territory had been
expanded and I no longer had the Central Coast as part of my
Territory. The bad news was I had to move to the San Joaquin Valley.
        6/22/1988.

I only saw SW1500's one time on this line in 1986. SD9's were the most popular
also saw some GP9's and the one SD7 #1503.

Thanks for looking, and reading

Jay

Photo 8 is, or was, the end of the Lompoc branch as you said Jay.. It ended at the Grefco fcorporatiion. Grefco was a larger company than Johns-Manville worldwide.

Grefco shipped diatomaceous earth, same as J-M.

I love the "softness" of photo #2, with regards to thel light.  It totally reminds me of how California "feels"--usually wonderful temperatures, nice sunlight, and just the feel that you're in a great state near the ocean.  Hard to explain.
