Seeing this landmark up close is something to be awestruck about 

the size and the beauty is awesome

Really spectacular.  Looks like an old RR bed in the foreground of the 2nd photo.

And this cut-off was built to save 15 minutes of time.  Huge expense / bridge construction / land work = 15 minutes.  Would any RR do that today??

 Only part of the story....it also eliminated a lot of street running and all grade crossings, provided a gentler ruiling grade, eliminated 42 curves, and raised train speeds.

Both tunnels still exist, blocked off at both ends.  Route 11 is the "old" roadbed converted into a highway. of driving 11 you see a few old freight houses and other "railroad" items.
