Nostalgia & History > A DDA40X in Feather River Canyon, 1984Date: 08/24/16 16:45 A DDA40X in Feather River Canyon, 1984 Author: MartyBernard In November of 1984 UP was running DDA40Xs in Feather River Canyon. Roger Puta was there. I have posted some of his photos from the month. Here are six more of one train. Unfortunately the weather was poor and so was the lighting. But never-the-less I think you will find Roger's photographs interesting.
The power was: 3579 and 3760, SD40-2s 2400, a C30-7 and 6943, the DDA40X Enjoy, Marty Bernard Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/24/16 17:09 by MartyBernard. Are you re-working the slides because of color-shift or are they over/under exposed? Were they kept properly? Or did they suffer from dirt and scratches? Mine sure did, though I swear I didn't handle them that poorly. Also, because I only had asa 25 Kodachrome, they were mostly poorly exposed (Argus C-3 "brick" and no light meter). When I tried to save money (Ansco-chrome, Technicolor), I paid the price when years later those slides faded away to almost clear.
Ed Date: 08/24/16 17:26 Re: A DDA40X in Feather River Canyon, 1984 Author: MartyBernard Ed, some of Roger's slides are nearly perfect. Scan them, sharpen them, and post them. For example, the Santa Fe 344L scan I posted yesterday ( http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4105224 ). These Feather River slides were very dark and quite blue. Thus much of the original color was gone, i.e., the dyes had deteriorated. I obviously don't know what they looked like 32 years ago. I'm told he used KK II exclusively. And by 1984 he had excellent cameras and lenses.
All his slides were kept mainly in Logan Boxes in the same places over the years. I have had next to know problems with scratches and dirt. The infrared scan cleans up 99% of dirt and scratches. I have found that my old Kodachromes have a wide variation in how well they scan. Any over or under or over exposure is magnified in the scans, and many have small, or not so small, color shifts. And then there are the dust and scratches. I appreciate how much work you are doing! The short Centennial era on the former WP was great, especially after we lost the WP to a plague of yellow SD40-2's. Of course, I would like to see a few of those today! Brian Stevens Date: 08/25/16 08:39 Re: A DDA40X in Feather River Canyon, 1984 Author: ntharalson Thanks for posting these, Marty. Additionally, the C30-7 was UP's first one, and they
had some 150 of them, so another "catch." The slides were very dark and quite deteriorated. This was the best I could do to bring them back. Marty Date: 08/25/16 19:46 Re: A DDA40X in Feather River Canyon, 1984 Author: Trainatic Thanks Marty. I appreciate all the pictures you post and many bring back such fond memories of days past.
