Nostalgia & History > An ex-UP Amtrak E-unit With the Pere MarquetteDate: 08/24/16 23:56 An ex-UP Amtrak E-unit With the Pere Marquette Author: MartyBernard AMTK E9A 422 brings in the morning Pere Marquette (Train 370) to Chicago Union Station on April 16, 1976. She was ex-UP 945. The BN coach yard adds quite a bit of interest to the photo.
Enjoy, Marty Bernard Date: 08/25/16 00:35 Re: An ex-UP Amtrak E-unit With the Pere Marquette Author: mp51w Marty, I don't think the Pere Marquette was running yet back then?

That yard clerk standing on the left writing down the car numbers would know........ but he is not saying anything Date: 08/25/16 09:33 Re: An ex-UP Amtrak E-unit With the Pere Marquette Author: MartyBernard My notes on the slide say Train 370. If not the Pere Marquette, then what?

It shows 370 as the westbound Blackhawk (372 on Saturdays and Sundays). The timetable lists it as RDC equipment but that is not to say conventional equipment never operated. As far as being on the wrong track, the Blackhawk operated over the ICG Iowa Line to Bridgeport where it switched over to the ex-GM&O to gain entrance to CUS controlled track at South Branch Bridge. The tracks between South Branch and Roosevelt Rd. were used in either direction so this could indeed be an inbound Blackhawk. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/25/16 10:42 by Englewood. For the record, it was named for Chief Black Hawk (like the CB&Q train) and is two separate words. My fifth grade class made a field trip to Rockford depot on Feb 13, 1974 to see the inaugural train of 3 RDC's. The official use of conventional equipment pulled by E's came in Feb 1976-- too many mechanical failures and hitting debris placed by vandals that disabled the RDC's-- esp through the Chicago suburbs. I forgot about having different train #'s for the weekend service. That timetable cover is one of the best! I sure wish I had taken pictures on the Chicago Cubs trips that featured a dome car on the Black Hawk. Date: 08/26/16 23:53 Re: An ex-UP Amtrak E-unit With the Pere Marquette Author: MartyBernard But April 16, 1976 was a Friday. And I have slides of long BN commuter trains and the Valpo train from that day. I would have never stood on the Roosevelt Road Viaduct on a Saturday or a Sunday when weekdays generate twice the number of trains.

With so many trains and some way off schedule, that I made clerical errors is quite probable. Sorry.
Marty Date: 08/31/16 04:18 Re: An ex-UP Amtrak E-unit With the Pere Marquette Author: Englewood The Friday schedule No. for the inbound Blackhawk was 370 so that matches your slide info.
Even if it was the Pere Marquette, the westbound train number would be 371 not 370. Looking at the BN coach yard it is indeed a week day. |
