Sacramento Northern 'Birney' # 62 visits SP 16th Street Station..
Author: KeyRouteKen

Hi Everybody--Let's try to visualize an historic period involving the streetcar system in the East Bay. The Key System # 12 Line served West Oakland and terminated at the Southern Pacific 16th Street Station in Oakland.  Patrons could transfer over to SP local or long-distance trains and leave their car at home. That is, if they owned a car !  On this bright, beautiful day, KSTL streetcar # 935 has arrived at 16th Street Station and the motorman is taking a 'break'.   Low and behold, the KEY has a visiting Trolley.   Sacramento Northern 'Birney' # 62 has detoured from the SN Yard at 40th & Shafter in Oakland and decided to take a Tour of some of KEY's routes just to see where they happen to go !   For any SP passengers waiting for a streetcar, this sight must have really thrown them for a loop !   And, if any SP passengers were really tuckered out from a long journey and wanted to take a nap without waiting for the ride to downtown Oakland, they could always check in at the "SP Hotel", across the street !

Enjoy the nostalgic photograph from the 1940's and note the SP Hotel in the background. By the way, the Sacramento Northern Yard and Depot at 40th Street & Shafter Avenue has been replaced by "Temescal Station" --- http://www.eastbaymodern.com/temescal-station.php

Cheers.

At least at the SP Hotel you did not have to pay for a full day (or night) since they also rented rooms by the hour!
