Sometimes There Are Shadows... GM&O 101

Sometimes there are shadows... Daylight is fleeing on April 14, 1973 as GM&O 101 with Amtrak's "Abraham Lincoln" sits in the shadow of Joliet Union Station in Joliet, IL. I couldn't move the station or the shadows, but I could try to get an acceptible image that included the shadows as there was no other way to get a side shot at the station.

Nice work using what you had.  The direct evening light highlights the subject making the photo more dramatic than just a shot in complete shadow.  Dare I say the photo is more dramatic than it would have been in full sun.  Well done!

Hate to say this but I am at a loss as to the manufacturer of the loco. Is it GM or FM? My ignorance or age is showing.

Given that the engines are gone, the trains are gone, and some of the track is gone, the shadows seem to be irrelevant.

I think the shadow sets the evening mood. To me, it doesn't kill the shot.

Refarkas, first congratulations for taking the shot even with the shadows. Many of the current railfan photographers wouldn't bother because the light wasn't perfect.

Please don't mislead folks, by adding the dash into EMD model designations. That passenger unit in the above photo is an EMD "E7A", or as sometimes shown on internal EMC/EMD paperwork, "EA7".

Alton E7A 101 s/n 1671 (GM&O 101) was the oldest E7A in Amtrak service.

Nothing wrong at all with that shot.  It is very clear and well composed.  Looks like it was taken last night.  I can almost hear it idling.

Love the shot -- much more interesting than a bright sun shot.  Anyhow, the E7 was in her twlight!
