Big Blk with that headlight at night, just something about them. Not to mention the older style single note horn they had then, But they are by far one of my favorite Electrics. Thanks for sharing. Date: 09/24/16 15:32 Re: 5 More of Amtrak GG1s Author: King_Coal I like the up close experience with the GG1. Memories of sights, sounds, smells come back. Newark, Trenton, Philly, N Philly, Wilmington, Lancaster all had those high-level platforms where you could experience that.
I think that's a power car on the last photo, with a fuel fill sticking out. Thanks for the posting. Date: 09/24/16 16:25 Re: 5 More of Amtrak GG1s Author: MartyBernard That makes sense. GG1s did not have equipment to provide HEP at three-phase AC at 480 V and Amtrak did convert some cars to power cars to provide the HEP.

Does any one have details about the combine/bagagge dorm trailing the motor in #4 on the Silver Meteor? I'm wondering if its one of those ex-Army hospital cars. Date: 09/24/16 20:41 Re: 5 More of Amtrak GG1s Author: Railfan2 Great Classic Amtrak

This was one of the coaches that was experimentally converted to an auto carrier for an aborted "Auto Train" operation on the West Coast. After the project was abandoned the converted auto carriers were used, among others, to build HEP generator cars.
