I have a vivid memory of standing at the old Casa Blanca staion in Riverside with the agent watching SF #7 speeding by with blue and yellow F Units leading the way! Is my memory accurate?

I would guess you do indeed have an accurate memory. While SFe nos #7 & #8 were famous for running with matched sets of PAs as well as passenger F-units, there is nothing to say that the "Fast Mail" didn't have Blue & Yellow Fs up front on occasion, rare though that might have been. There is one "concrete fact" I learned in a full career as a railroader: Absolutely NOTHING in the RR world is concrete. The so-called status quo can go for months, even years at a time. But there will always come some exception to the rule...

Freight units on the Fast Mail would have been very unusual.

Never did see freight F's on No.'s 7 or 8 so that would be a rarety.  It could have happened.  Would love to see a photo of that.
