Family and UP 3985 at Houston -- Oct 92
Author: gcm

My family was visiting on the same day that #3985 was leaving town.
I suggested we "drive around Houston" working my way to the area that I might catch the train.
Not the best spot but I got a few shots near downtown and US 59 (this track is now gone).
My mom and aunt in the first shot enjoyed seeing a steam engine for the first time in a while (they saw quite a few in their lifetime).

Along with the UP cars, CSX added a few this trip.

They weren't going very far. No extra water! I don't remember ever seeing the Challenger opperate after the oil conversion without atleast one water bottle and the tool car.

Was 3985 in Houston in October that year?  I remember her being there in August for the 1992 Repubican National Convention.  She sat on the track east of the Astrodome along Almeda Road for the entire week.

Excellent:. You have  3985 on track that is now gone, and you photoed the entire train both front and rear.

I think you are right. 3985 is leaving Houston after the convention.
I was going by the date on my slide. I must have delayed getting the film processed.
It explains why the CSX cars were in town.

I believe this was a HB&T line that - among other things - the Burlington and Rock Island passenger trains used from Union Station.
A short distance north from my shots it crossed Buffalo Bayou on the 1912 built Buffalo Bayou Bascule Bridge - which is still there under US 59 freeway.
It was on the east side of US 59. It was lost after freeway expansion.
Maybe someone can confirm this.

Interesting to see the Sherman Hill immediately behind the tender, as well.

Thanks for the memory jog! That is what it was indeed! That was the old passenger main from Belt Junction to Union Station. The freight main is now double and triple track in spots from GH&H Junction to Belt Junction.
