Gotta love Nevada, quirky, iconoclastic and beautiful. Thanks for the long, strange trip ( to plagiarize the Grateful Dead just a little.)

Looks like a good town for rails to layover.
The "Tiki Hut" looks great but "Inez's" looks like the place to be. That would be the joint a lot of rails would take their calls from. Im just guessing.  :):)

HA!  "Diddling": Inez's certainly looks like a railroader's gateway to divorce, unemployment and perudition, eh?

For some reason, I'm attracted to the Tiki Hut photo, SR. Thanks fo a wonderful series. I wish that I knew something about the Overland Route so that I could appreciate your work even more.

EO, I was baiting you with the Tiki photo- that's the location I'd photographed 30 odd years ago. The bar on the right was called the 449er back then, and you 'shopped an extra 4 for me.
The 449er sigh is still there, it's just covered up with a piece of plywood now.

The "Rex" marker reminded me of the cemetary at Beowawe; off in the corner, away from the more elaborate markers, was a small stone that just said "Chang."

Yes- you are exactly right.
The names and locations of those 2 stones were curious.
Rex was in the far corner way from the others suggesting a pet? The Chinese sounding name was lined up with the other family stones, but smaller, like Rex's.
A beloved employee?

Thank you very much for an excellent series of photos and great descriptions.  I suspect you may have additional photos that were not posted.  Have you considered putting everything together in booklet form covering your trip from start to finish?  I would gladly purchase a copy.  The Overland Route is my favorite portion of the SP, especially the territory from Sparks to Ogden.  Thanks again!!

Thanks for posting.  Sometimes the "throw aways" are actually the best.  Great job of capturing the vastness of Nevada and the feel of the open desert.

When necrofoaming the original transcontinental railroad route in eastern Nevada and western Utah in the future, don't forget Kelton, Utah.

The March 27, 1903 Nevada State Herald (of Wells, Nevada) (pg. 8, col. 2) reported that a new roundhouse was being constructed at Kelton to replace the one destroyed by fire the previous fall.

That there were roundhouses at Kelton is definitely a little-known fact (there is no mention of such in Signor's Salt Lake Division book).

Do a Google Images search for Table Shower, you'll get the general idea pretty quick.

Thanks for your fantastic photos, I enjoyed them a whole lot.

Yes, I'm aware of the Kelton Roundhouse and have a map of the track plan from the 1880's that shows the turntable's location.  But there's no trace of it on Google Earth.  I've been to Kelton and it's been pretty beat up over the years, so I'm not real optimistic about finding anything of it to photograph.  (Terrace is far better preserved)   But I certainly won't dismiss Kelton, it figures large on the CPRR route in Utah.
But, thanks for the heads up- even if I can't find it, someone else might!
