Thankful Thursday: Rock Island 244
Author: refarkas

Sometimes a glassine envelope of black and white negatives has a surprise in it.
Here is Rock Island 244 heading three GE U-Boats east underneath the Wilbeth Road footbridge in Akron, Ohio. It is the early 1970's, and the GE's are on the EL.

Used to watch the Rock Island is Liberal, Kansas. 14 track yard at one time with two switchers on duty 24 hours a day. Two west freights out of Kansas City were reblocked every day here along with very long trains of empty reffers going back to California being assembled out of the yard. They would double one 4000 ft yard track over to another and spend a while pumping air while blocking two or three city streets and NOBODY whined about it.

How often did Rock units run on the EL?  I remember MILW and early BN units on EL.  But RI is a new one on me.

I saw them several times. I really can't say how many times they ran. Sorry.

The RI had a run through agreement with the EL.    I don't think it lasted for very long.

Several photos of the RI run throughs have been published in the Morning Sun "hard cover slide show" books.
