New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal (night) -- Sept 77
Author: gcm

A few night shots at New Orleans back in the "good old days" when one could wander around the platforms and no one cared.

(1)  The occupied LA-NY transcontinental sleeper is on the rear of the Southern Crescent (left).
This day it is the Southern 10-6 Tye River (Pullman-Standard 1949).
The Sunset Limited consist is on the right.
(2)  A little class at the end of the Sunset Limited is the ex-CZ dome-observation Silver Lookout.

(3) Pullman-Standard built dome-parlor 1602 is in the consist.

(4)  The diner is quiet now but what great meals will be served the next day.

(5)  Southern Crescent on the left - Sunset Limited right.

(6)  4 Southern E8 units are attached to the train all night - while the SDP40F units will not arrive for the SLimited (left) till almost train time the next day.

Excellent photos!  Thank you for sharing.

"Silver Lookout" was the spare or extra Vista Dome Buffet Observation Sleeper built in 1953 for service on the CZ and to cycle on the Aksarben Zephyr with her sister cars.

Pretty sure the reason the SR units stayed on the train all night was to avoid terminal charges for hostling, fueling, etc.

IIRC Southern swapped the power out on the Southern Crescent both ways at Atlanta, which likely allowed the power to make an Atlanta-New Orleans or Atlanta-DC roundtrip without needing service at either end in Amtrak's gas station.

Doing it in black and white really sets the mood.  It's a great set of photographs.

Great photos, thank you!  Brings back memories of my New Orleans stay in the transcontinental sleeper Amtrak 2923, "Pacific Park", October 21-22, 1984.

I really like the platfrom shot with the 1602 across from the Pacific Plateau on the Sunset Ltd.
BTW, Pacific Plateau is a Geometry Test car now.
