Are the SD40X these basically just SD35s with wings on the outside? Very interesting nonetheless.

SD35s with flares, three 48" radiator fans, and most importantly a 3000 hp 16-645 engine inside.

They may have looked plain.  But they gave birth to the SD40 which changed railroading forever.

Which makes them not "SD35s with flares,"  but SD40s.  They also had a different alternator than did SD35s.

Betsy,

The 35 series units did NOT have "alternators". The 35 series units still used the D32 Main Generator, which was DC with a commutator armature.

The SD40X units were the test beds for the 16-645E3 engine and the AR-10 alternator.
The 35 series units were the end of the line for the 567 and DC Generators.
