D&RGW Krauss-Maffei #4002
Author: Rainier_Rails

I recently acquired this duplicate slide (brand unknown) of 2 of Rio Grande's 3 diesel-hydraulic engines built by Krauss-Maffei leading a westbound manifest up the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, towards Rocky Siding and the Big Ten Curves.  Photographer and date are unknown.

Is that a foamer pacing it? Lol

I wish someone wouldve had tape recordings of those units in action. Always wanted to know what they sounded like.

I was there.  Don't know if my slide is as good, this is only a low-res scan I did a few years back.  Ken Crist and Wes (last name forgotten) were there that day.   The sound was very much like a diesel truck (or an Alco).  It was the "humm" that was different.  I'll look up the date.  (edit: is was February 11, 1962.)

I imagine the test car was still used throughout the 1960's and into 70's.  Remember D&RGW was still buying new models during that time frame, such as the GP30's,GP35's, GP40's, SD45's, 1966/67,GP40-2's 1972 and the tunnel motors starting in 1974

Wigwag, you might be able to hear one as the SP 9010 is under restoration at the Niles Canyon Railway.

Remember what "portable" tape recorders looked like back then?  And today you can buy a VERY good digital recorder for under 100 bucks(Tascam DR-05).  I rented one last year to record the sounds of the Nevada Northern and they work GREAT.  Clamp on right below your camera on a tripod and you can expect movie like sound.  Wish I had one that day.  All I had was a stinkin' Argus C-3 which I could not master well enough.
