Amazing that several survived into the BN merger period, one was the Seattle switcher for some time.

Nice photos.  Thanks for sharing.

I'm pretty sure the photo of the Milwaukee Road SW1 was taken in Milwaukee near the passenger depot.

I like the Western Pacific SW1 the best.  They weren't ashamed of who they were and showed it with that large logo on the cab and extra blurb on the hood.  What other railroad ever tooted its horn that well?

That particular unit (BN 70) survived into the BNSF merger period.  It was converted to burn propane and was the shop goat at Alliance, NE until 2001:

That's a scanner artifact that sometimes shows up at high-contrast edges when you try to lighten a scan of a dark slide.  The very bright white ends up bleeding over into the very dark black around it.  Note that the cab window shade and the bottom of the fuel tank also have "red outlining" for the same reason.
