I realize that I have missed much in life but could someone explain the meaning of the small letter suffix that is attached
to number of these locos? I have a pictures of a couple of Southern E units that also displayed the small letters. Just wondering.

It was called a check code letter and was designed to prevent inaccurate data entries into the computer system.  There was a mathematical formula for determining which of several letters went with a particular road number (the letters were not ramdomly assigned).  If someone entered an engine number incorrectly the computer would recognize it.

and other Trainorders threads too.

Lots of useful information is buried in Trainorders going back at least 13 years when I joined, probably longer. The search feature can be very helpful. Or you can ask, but you'll get more detailed information if you search.
