The First E5A -- Well Sort of
Author: MartyBernard

This is a purchased slide.  I have no information other than you can see.

But a couple of good rosters provide some interesting tid-pits:
  • 9908 built in 4/39 was the last EMC AA built for the CB&Q.
  • 9910A, 9910B, 9911A, and 9911B were the first E5As EMC built for the CB&Q in 2/40.
  • E5A 9909 (pictured here) was built out of sequence with an EMC date of 3/40.  Her builder number, 970, is also out of sequence.
  • 9908 weighed 201,820 lbs.
  • 9909 weighed 314,800 lbs. and was sold to C&S as 9953 in 12/55.
  • The first E5s EMD built were 9914A and B in 6/41.
Not much of a photo.  She has a partial skirt up front.  Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

Being the unit is lettered for the "Sam Houston Zephyr"  I would guess it was
operating on the FW&D at the time of the photo.... that would probably put
it in the late 40s or early 50s before the transfer to the C&S. If I recall correctly,
the 9911A at Union, IL was the C&S 9952.
