Last days of MILW roundhouse in Savanna Ill. 1983
Author: slacks

The MILW roundhouse and shop area are now just weeks away from the bulldozers and wrecking cranes. The now downsized MILW has shifted most diesel work to Nahant Ia. The lead that hosted most any kind of diesel now lies rusted and ready for rip-up. The next shot from 1978 shows a GP-30 ready to enter the house for some light work. CP trains still roll by but this spot is now a hardware store.

Savanna was heaven on earth to a Milwaukee Road fan.  Loved going there in the 70's.

I remember Savannah from April, 1965 when I was aboard the westbound City of Los Angeles.  The yard had a lot of track flooded and as we crept through the attendant in the lounge car warned us it was last call before we entered "dry state" Iowa.  Iowa certainly isn't dry now.  Is my memory that faulty?
