Nostalgia & History > Toto Tuesday: Mulvane in the mirrorDate: 01/17/17 04:15 Toto Tuesday: Mulvane in the mirror Author: santafe199 More smoke & mirrors… without the smoke. Looking through my Canon A-1 you can imagine yourself being the head brakeman sitting in the cab of AT&SF SD40-2 #5123 rolling south (TT west) through downtown Mulvane, KS. You are on the point of train 355 H-1 clipping a Winfield-bound ballast work train known officially as: “WORK H-1”. You get a grab shot of the work train as it recedes in your rear view mirror. Your train will pass through the crossover plant at Bridge St and exit Mulvane to the southeast via the Middle Division 3rd District siding. The ballast train will follow via the 3rd District main, and then dog you all the way to Winfield…

Ah yes, you have noticed the effects of shooting into the rear-view mirror. And "they" say the mirror never lies... ;^) Date: 01/17/17 06:37 Re: Toto Tuesday: Mulvane in the mirror Author: twjurgens Great post! (maybe you need more to do with your time:)

When you all went to Ark City instead of Wellington, did you spend the night in Ark City or did you all catch a train and go back same day? Thanks. On the Middle Division we had regular lodging in all 3 mainline, away-from-home terminals: Arkansas City, Wellington & Newton (as well as several branch line locations). It was routine to be 'put up' at these places of lodging after completing a trip. On occasion, we would skip the lodging and 'double out' of these terminals provided we had reasonable enough hours of service left to work. The fact that it was Wellington or Ark City or Newton had no influence at all on the carrier doubling us back. It was solely because of the balance between traffic flow & crew availability...
