Where Was Roger?
Author: MartyBernard

Roger Puta took this in July 1982.  A good bet is that this was in Wisconsin.

Thanks,
Marty Bernard

Those were the Chicago Madison & Northern colors that Glenn Monhart's F Unit were once painted in.
In 1990, I made a photo of this unit in Monterey IN lettered Indiana Erie.

The locomotive is ex-C&NW #1689 a former passenger/commuter unit.  Note the stack from
the steam generator on the short hood.  This locomotive spent its last days working out of
Winona, MN on the "Alco Line" to Rapid City, SD.  This trackage became the ill-fated DM&E.

Looks like the Central Wisconsin engine house west of Waukesha, WI   The Chicago Madison and Northern  broke a pinion gear on the 1689  So Gary moved it from Janesville to Waukesha while the CM&N was shut down (due to bankruptcy)   They changed out the pinion without a drop pit at that facility.
