Amtrak #14 at Davis, CA 1981
Author: qnyla

This is a repost, but I was reworking the image and thought I'd share it again.

Shortly before the train was converted to Superliners, Amtrak #14, the northbound Coast Starlight, makes a station stop at Davis, CA on January 11, 1981 with F40PH #231 leading SDP40F units #633 and #622. The train is sitting on the west leg of the wye at Davis, CA with the rear of the train still fouling the Cal-P main. The train will leave Davis on the West Valley line, a practice that ended a year later in April 1982 when the train was rerouted via Sacramento-Roseville and the East Valley line.

Thanks for sharing. Great to see what Davis looked like before my time.

I was in graduate school at UCD in 1971-73 and didn't take nearly enough pictures.  Davis was so different then.  I liked the wigwags on the West Valley Line in town myself.  The Davis Depot grounds were very primitive back then.  Here's the southbound run one April 1973 morning.  The train is coming off the West Valley Line and will pull to a stop just short of getting onto the Cal-P.

Stan, thanks for the look back to Davis in 1971-1973.  I was 8-10 years old then and also enjoyed the wigwags in town on the West Valley Line.

1. Here is a view from 10 years later in 1981.  Amtrak #11, the Los Angeles bound Coast Starlight, makes a station stop at Davis, CA, the juction of the SP West Valley Line with the SP Cal-P mainline, at dawn on January 24, 1981.

2. Here is that primitive condition of the Davis depot grounds. 1982.

3. A shot of some icile breaker equiped SD9Es on the Davis switcher heading west on the west leg of the wye 1980.

Looks like the head end is about to receive some train orders

And later after refurbishment of depot in 1987.

And the overdone mess in 2005.

The west end of the west leg hadn't
been extended to where it is now?

You are probably right, train not that long.
