A Ride on RDC SP-10 -- Northwestern Pacific Railroad

And it appears they were dog friendly to boot!

I really wish that I would have been able to ride this line.

While I don't know who the engineer was way back "then" I also rode SP 10 from Eureka to Willits. Myself and another unknown "kid" (I was around 16 at the time) rode up with the engineer for the entire trip and he let us take turns blowing the horn as we went along - super friendly crews back then.

Surprised Charlie Coleman the conductor would let you get near the engineer room. He was the pit bull guarding the engineer
