Date: 02/20/17 14:12 Re: Chicago Missouri and Northwestern Author: Cumbres I would have thought that CNW and CMW would be easily confused but that CMNW being 4 letters might not. But only conjecture on my part.

I gotcha now, once I got home and looked at it on my phone I could zoom in and make out the Sangamon Center sign and then recognized St Aloysius Church. Posted from iPhone Edited 2 time(s). In the eighties there was an effort by the AAR to make new reporting marks four letters to completely fill that data input field on most car tracking software, which also did not know how to interpret and process an ampersand (&). Since the CM&W could not BE "CM&W", somebody got cute and turned the "&" into a "N"...think "CM n' W", like "bicuits n' gravy." Yes, I could see where some clerks would get confused with CNW (Chicago & North Western) and CMNW, perhaps *assuming* it was written down wrong. This was not a new problem, even in pre-coumputer days: NYC subsidiary Peoria & Eastern often found its cars confused with those of Pacific Electric, there was even a large notation in the P&E's ORER listing reminding billing clerks not to do this. When computer car tracking became more prevalent, Peoria & Eastern went to reporting mark "PAE" to separate itself from the PE. NZ |
