Based on the semaphore number, this SP freight was photographed on the Carrizozo Subdivision in New Mexico on SP's Golden State Route. Mileposts are from San Francisco. MP 1502 is between sidings at Corona, NM (MP 1491) and Duran (MP 1511). Corona is at the top of the grade. At Vaughn (MP 1525) the SP goes under Santa Fe's transcon main. Mileposts increase until Tucumcari (MP 1627), where Rock Island trackage began.

Cool photo animation!

FWIW, the 7798 seen here is a Cotton Belt unit.

That was on my old district.  I had the signals from the east end of Carrizozo to the 1511 signals at Duran.  I might have seen him out there as I was working there until june of 84.
Great little burger spot in corona. Also, Corona had searchlights, the only set on my district.  There was also a pair of RI tri lights west of Corona on a curve which every crew complained about. You could see them up close but not far, adjust them out, then the compained that they could not be seen close up, even with the hotspot turned into the curve. I found a few 10v 40watt signal lamps in a tool shed. Normal lamps are 25watt, so the 40watt lamps did the trick. Great place to work, back then.
