The SP Lark Arriving at San Francisco in 1967
Author: MartyBernard

These are Roger Puta's photographs.  Roger wrote in his caption, "... crossing 4th St. at Berry St. near the SP depot ..." which is not correct.  Berry St. is farther south.  That is the 4th Street Crossing with a crossing guard.  Longer trains in the station had to block this crossing, right?

1. SP 6452, an FP7, with Train 75, the Lark, arriving at the 3rd and Townsend SP depot, San Francisco, CA on August 25, 1967.

2. The Pullmans.

3.  An articulated coach.

Enjoy Roger's railfanning,
Marty Bernard

The 4th St xing was right at the end of the
platform sheds. This crossing is 300? feet
west of there, and I think it wasn't supposed
to be blocked for long. The 4th St crossing
was closed during rush hour.

You can see the two xings in the first pic
in the other thread

Well well well-- looks like there were two xings
west of 4th St. The one with the flagman is
just NE of the tower, and another was about
midway between that xing and 4th St.

I have a vague memory of being at the old SF terminal in the late 1967 when the Lark came in with 6458 on the point.  The horn set had been tuned to sound like a steam whistle--I knew that  steam power was long gone, but until 6458 came into view, I thought that one steamer had survived in service.

1)  Facade of the old SP 3rd & Townsend station shortly before demolition.

2)  An old Warren Zevon song comes to mind: "But the train don't run by here no more, "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."

3)  Adjusting the Wayback Machine for a year or so earlier--back when the SP Commutes were the only suburban passenger service west of Chicagoland, and the Fairbanks Morse TrainMasters ruled the peninsula.  More things that aren't there anymore: Ads for Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians (fortunately, he didn't follow throught on his prediction "When I go, I'm going to take New Year's Eve with me") and Bay Meadows race track has been gone for several years now.
