The San Francisco bound "Coast Daylight" is a mile or so from its next station stop in San Jose.

Thats when the equipment interchanged with the Sunset Limited at LA, when the Mission Coach yards were closed.

No doubt-just in the front end; a PC &F express box, 2 Budd Sunset coaches, one of the dreaded auto mat cars, and a pair of former Cascade cars, possibly the amputated former Timberline lounnge set, can;t tell if they have vestibules from here, and then an ex COSF coach.
Great shot !

Weeeeellll... all good up until the first Simulated Stainless Chair Cars, anyhow!

Those two are very likely a pair of 1949 "Shasta Daylight" cars -- the 1949 Duralumin-skinned originals vs. the 1954 steel-carbody copies. Determiner is the underbody configuration and a slight visible trace of the 1949 car's belt molding below the windows.

The first one shows enough underbody to determine that it was one of the "Vestibule Rear" cars -- the 1949 Shasta was designed to empty and load passengers faster by always having two adjacent vestibules. Cars built "Vestibule Rear" would be the lefthand member of a pair, the car with Vestibule Forward would be to its right, aligning the two so they were next to each other. The underbody layouts were flipped to keep equipment on the same side of every car relative to station platforms for efficiency of servicing.

The first car of that pair has no radio antenna, but the second car still does. If the first car's antenna hadn't been removed, it could be SP 2398, a Vestibule Rear car that never had an antenna. (By this late date, antennas may not have survived shoppings, and vestibule orientation by car type (or to group two together) was pretty much obsolete.) The second otherwise identical "Shasta" Chair Car doesn't show enough underbody to determine a narrowed range of possible car numbers.

The yellow car is indeed part of a City service pool. It's a former C&NW car built in 1953 for the COSF and purchased by SP in 1961. Several retained the UP Armour Yellow scheme through the 1970s; not enough features visible here to assign a number, but the class included SP 2211 to SP 2215, and SP 2219. For HO scale modelers, Walthers did these cars in HO and got the unique SP detailing correct, including trucks and side sill differences between these and their quite similar UP AC&F Chair Car series.

The meal car following is certainly a Budd 1950 "Sunset Limited" veteran, but the line pole obscures the location of the second kitchen door, so it's not possible to declare from this scan if it's a Pride of Texas Coffee Shop, or an Audubon Diner. Typical would be the Coffee Shop, for this train and era.

Which is most likely 1968 or 1969? The SDPs did not all keep their steam generator water transfer hoses on pilot decks for long, but they're clearly in place here on SP 3209, last of the class. The pilot's a little weatherbeaten, but overall it's sure nice to see the unit looking so nice.

More great pics from Photobob...

I date this summer 1968. The ACF was in the Daylight pool that summer. The Budd coffee shop was providing dining service, not backup automat service.

That's as good a determiner as any, the yellow car. Sold. Summer '68.
