Here are a couple FA lead Long Island Railroad trains on December 31, 1979

Image one is an FA1heading north through Williston Park NY (just past the East Williston station near Mineola)

Image two is in Garden City, NY at the Merril Avenue Station.

Image three is in New Hyde Park, NY.

Nice shots. The 611 ex SP&S may one day become an active locomotive again. ---  Ken 

I see the crossings even bow to the passing Alcos.

I had the pleasure of running thousands of miles on the LIRR 611 on its original railroad.

The first picture shows one of its less-than-glamorous days after being fished out of the Deschutes River in north central Oregon on the SP&S subsidiary Oregon Trunk Railway.

The second and third pictures show it in passenger service on the SP&S in 1970 several months after the SP&S was leased by the BN as a part of the merger.

As I recall, it was the only SP&S Alco FA to receive that experimental paint scheme.  About a year and a half after the BN merger it had the honor of assisting the LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman during a poor-steaming day in Montana.  I'm still trying to find someone who took a picture of that event.

Wow, didn't know FAs had showed up on BN passenger service.

Thanks for posting.  Brings back a flood of memories growing up on Long Island watching these units pass behind my house daily.   LIRR 607 is ex Western Maryland 303 and still exists in WV.  Number 600 is ex NYC 1102 and still exists albeit rotting away in western NY as part of the WNY RR Historical Society collection.

One former LIRR FA-control unit made it to Passaic NJ for Jimmy Wilson's New York & Greenwood Lake project.  I don't know if it moved to Port Jervis.

Does the water tank in the top shot say Williston? That's a place on Long Island.

You know, I was looking at that crossing on Google and rejected it because I couldn't see the water tank. I just looked again and dang - it's there in the trees now.

Were did you live I was in New Hyde Park

Thanks - I don't think the buildings match though.  I wonder if maybe there is a newer overpass somewhere that has replaced this crossing.

 

I shot many feet of sound super8 of these running past Belmont Race Track on long Island in 1976 while we were on spot with the American Freedom Train.

Looking at the photo again, I think the tank says Williston Park (next door to East Williston).

I wonder if the BN FA's are on a fan trip? The mid-train baggage car (closer to the rear) suggests that.

That's where I assumed you were sending me. That's the grade crossing, north of East Williston that I looked at.

Yes.  It was a chartered train from Portland to the Summer 1970 Scandinavian Festival in Junction City, Oregon.  This many years later I don't recall whether it was operated by the Vernonia, South Park & Sunset Steam Railroad or the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.  Both all-volunteer, non-profit groups operated many chartered trains out of Portland in that era as a means of augmenting their income to support their rail history-oriented activities.

Jim, the passenger train is time-table westward, compass southward on the flood-plain-spanning trestle portion of the SP&S subsidiary Oregon Electric Railway crossing of the Willamette River at Wilsonville.  The last car of the train has just come off of the bridge portion over the river which is seen in this view looking downstream in a NE direction with these two SP&S Alco C-425s just leaving Wilsonville headed for Albany on train #325 in July 1969.

Trains 325 (Portland to Albany) and 326 (Albany to Portland) provided daytime local freight service between those cities.  There were two crews each making three two-day round trips per week.  After the connecting track to the Astoria Line was installed to form a wye at the west end of the Willamette River Bridge at Willbridge the home terminal for those trains, as well as the night through trains 231 (Portland to Eugene) and 230 (Eugene to Portland), was changed from Portland to Vancouver.
