However, both locomotives were built in (June of) 1970. As another poster said, it would loose it's (external) flares after it and 3657 were wrecked on Thanksgiving of 1973. They were eastbound on the westbound main leading UPS train Second New York 100 when some kids opened a switch that lead them into an industrial track at Windham, OH at 50 mph. Hornell rebuilt both units with EMD supplied parts. 3667 retained it's electrical cabinet, cab, sub-base and short nose. Basically, it received a new 45-2 carbody with one extra engine room door and a 6 inch spacer piece. The lead unit (3657) received more damage. It ended up with a new -2 electrical cabinet, cab, sub-base and short hood in addition to the new 45-2 carbody. 3667 was scrapped in Boise in the late 1990's. However, 3657 was recently sold by Montana Rail Link and is now in Indiana or Ohio and 3668 was rebuilt as part of the SP SD40M-2 rebuild program by MK in 1994.
