WOW! Great B&O images. My favorite is the ABA F-unit lashup.
Thanks for posting this.

I wonder if the Sand Patch shot shows former WM traffic off the P&WV (N&W)?

rantoul,

The camera I had then was not great, so can't tell much from this crop of the pickup's. I would guess they were for military use, most likely Air Force.

Yes, the 4536 picture was taken at Cincinnati Junction (CJ), the South end of the B&O predessesor CH&D (Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton).

The track in the immediate right foreground is the connection to the B&O St. Louis Division, used by freight trains whereas passenger trains used the Cincinnati Union Terminal Southwest connection carried overhead by bridgework.

The autoracks look to be on the C&O of Indiana which made it's way to Cheviot OH after crossing the Ohio River on the C&O bridge, behind you and to the right.

The street overpass is 8th Street.  As an aside, the name of the concrete batch plant in the background 'Richter' is an old local name.  Richter Transfer was involved in highway and other projects in the area, most notably in construction of Cincinnati Union Terminal.   John Richter, a descendant of the Richter family was one of a group of local businessmen that started the Indiana & Ohio, with the purchase of the old NYC Whitewater branch from Valley Junction OH to Brookville IN.

Very nice material, sir. I saw just enough of the B&O in my youth to know I'd never satisfy my appatite for more.

Fantastic looking B&O photos. 4009 is on what they called the freight track at Virginia Lane. Love the shot at Sand Patch.I agree I think that might be WM traffic coming off the N&W. Check out those 2 different 4's on the numberboards on 4009..

Is the photo taken looking toward the river or is the Ohio behind the photographer, or perhaps to the left of the photographer? I grew up on State Avenue and can't seem to orient myself as the CH&D was essentially in my backyard. It would also help if I could figure out the location of the Mill Creek in relation to the photographer.

Thanks.

Great stuff. By the late 70s, N&W trains were terminating at the B&O yard in Connellsville, at it was common for Chessie to "borrow"  N&W power that was laying over there.

DaleR,

8th St paralells the Ohio river. It is behind the photog about 400 ft. The Mill Creek is to the left of the picture. The B&O accessed the old CH&D via a diamond behind and to the left of the photographer, then over a bridge South of the Mill Creek barrier dam. The diamond crossed the track you see in the right foreground, and it was behind the flood wall (behind the photographer)

Thanks, helps me figure out the routing. I lived out at the end of State Avenue where it changed to Harrison.

So is 4536 heading south? And if so, is it a transfer drag?

If you view the 1952 Cincinnati area railroad map at this site:

http://www.cincinnativiews.net/Railroads.htm

You will see Cincinnati Jct. (CJ) under the Southern.  The 4536 is pulling South out of Yard A, and may be doubling.  He also may be heading for the C&O bridge to go to DeCoursey or Stevens Yard.  At the time this picture was taken work rules in the area generally meant that the originating railroad would provide the power to take cuts to the destination railroad.
There were exceptions to this rule, mainly the L&N.  It is difficult to tell from this picture where the train was headed, and he actually may be backing into Yard A after coming off the CH&D (shown to the extreme left in the map mentioned above).
