A trip to Council Bluffs IA in 1984 revealed a couple of UP early diesel survivors still working but near end off their days. GP-30,s and especillay GP-9,s were dwindling daily and I believe the 256 was the last GP-9 to work and finally was retired in 1985. The last of the GP-30,s hung on for a few more yrs but were gone by 1990. Each of these model once ruled the mainline but were downgraded as new power was delievered. Maybe someday a GEVO will be switching, who knows!

And when UP GP-30 844 was retired, it meant that UP 4-8-4 8444 could get its old number back.
